Provisional licence
Where to Write the VID Provisional Test
Depot, not a classroom
Only an examiner at VID can test you for the learner's licence. A school can teach you and can transport you, but the computer, the eye test and the licence are at the depot. Ask for the Vehicle Inspection Department that covers your town, and confirm the testing day before you travel. Arriving on a day when that centre is not examining learners costs you the bus fare and nothing else.
How to choose where to go
Use the depot you can actually reach with your ID in the morning, not a famous depot in another city. The question bank is national. A pass in Mutare is the same class of learner's licence as a pass in Harare. What changes is the queue and the day of the week.
If you live in Harare and you also want a car and an instructor for the later practical, book theory in PassDrive first and on-road lessons with Appheal when the learner's licence is issued.
What to confirm the day before
- That learner's tests are being sat that day
- The opening time and whether there is a cut-off for new candidates
- The prescribed fee and how it is paid
- That you are carrying your original national ID
Questions people ask
Can I write in a different city from the one on my ID?
The depot has to be satisfied about your identity. Phone that depot before you travel if your address and the centre are in different places.
Are private mock exams accepted instead?
No. A school mock is practice. The provisional licence comes only from the VID test.
