Overtaking Diagram Questions

Look at the paint first
Cover the cars with your hand and read the centre line. Solid means the manoeuvre is already wrong, so any answer that has you alongside the truck is wrong. Broken means you then check the rest of the picture: an oncoming car, a junction just ahead, a pedestrian crossing, a warning triangle for a hidden dip. Any one of those puts you back behind the slow vehicle.
The rules in sentences are on the overtaking page.

Practice
The diagram shows a solid white centre line and a slow car. What is the correct action?
- Overtake on the right before the line changes
- Overtake on the left
- Stay behind
- Overtake if no oncoming car is drawn
Show the answer
C. Stay behind. You do not cross a solid centre line to overtake, whether or not the artist drew an oncoming car.
Questions people ask
The car ahead is indicating right. May I pass on its left?
Do not treat the left side as an overtaking lane. Wait, unless you are in a marked lane that is already for that movement.
