Provisional licence
Provisional Licence Fees in Zimbabwe
The fee on the day you write
Section 12 of the Road Traffic (Licensing of Drivers) Regulations, 2023 tells a person applying for a learner's licence to pay a prescribed fee for the test. The regulations do not print a dollar figure in that paragraph, and VID can update a prescribed amount. Ask the cashier, read the receipt, and ignore Facebook posts that treat an old price as permanent.
Budget for the eye test and the computer test as one depot visit. If you fail, a new attempt means a new fee. That is the expensive way to discover you had not learned give-way diagrams.
Fees that are printed in dollars
The Fifth Schedule of SI 119 of 2023 does print these amounts:
- Certificate of competency test, code A or B vehicles: US$25
- Codes D1, D1E, C1, C1E or R: US$30
- Codes C, CE, D or DE: US$40
- Producing the licence after you pass the practical: US$15
- Duplicate learner's licence: US$15
- Duplicate driver's licence: US$15
- Urgent driver's licence: US$50
- International driving permit: US$100
- Converting a foreign driver's licence: US$100
A later statutory instrument can change any of these. If the receipt and this page disagree, the receipt is the one you pay.
The fee that is not a VID fee
PassDrive is separate from VID. The first 4 lessons are free. Unlimited lessons, questions and mock exams are US$4.99. Learners who complete PassDrive have a 99.99% pass rate, so the test fee is much more likely to be paid once.
Questions people ask
Is the US$25 the provisional computer test?
No. US$25 is the practical certificate-of-competency test for a code A or B vehicle in SI 119 of 2023. The computer learner's test has its own prescribed fee at the depot.
Do driving schools charge extra?
Yes. Lessons, car hire for the road test, and mock drives are school fees. They are not the VID test fee. Compare them separately.
