Mandatory Road Signs

Orders, not suggestions

If the blue circle shows an arrow straight up, you proceed straight. You do not turn because your turn is more convenient. If it shows a left arrow, you turn left at the junction ahead. The roundabout mandatory sign is the one learners lose: travel in a clockwise direction, because Zimbabwe drives on the left, and yield to traffic approaching from your right inside the circle.

How they differ from blue rectangles

A blue rectangle is usually information: a service, a lane destination, a facility. A blue circle is an order. On a fast question, look at the outline before you read the symbol.

These are PassDrive practice examples, written so you learn the rule. The VID screen randomises its questions, so the wording on the day will be different.

Practice

A blue circle shows a white arrow pointing straight ahead. You wanted to turn right. What do you do?

  1. Turn right if you indicate early
  2. Go straight. The sign is mandatory
  3. Stop and wait for a gap to turn
  4. Treat it as a warning of a one-way road somewhere ahead
Show the answer

B. Go straight. The sign is mandatory. Ahead-only means ahead only. Find another lawful route for the right turn.

Questions people ask
