How to Get a Driver's Licence in Zimbabwe

The steps

  1. Be at least 16, with your national ID.
  2. Pass the eye test and the 25-question computer test at VID.
  3. Receive the learner's licence. It lasts 12 months.
  4. Practise with L plates and a licensed supervisor.
  5. Pass the practical test. The certificate of competency stands in for a licence for 30 days while the licence is produced.
  6. Pay the production fee and collect the driver's licence.

Step 2 is the one this site is built for. Use the VID test guide and start PassDrive free.

Codes

An ordinary car sits in the light-vehicle codes, often still called Class 4 in conversation. Heavier goods vehicles and passenger public-service vehicles have higher age and experience rules. Do not book a kombi test because you passed a car learner's paper. The code on the application is the code you are tested on.

Questions people ask

Can I convert a foreign licence instead?

SI 119 of 2023 sets a conversion application and a fee of US$100, with the foreign licence itself and, if required, a translation and confirmation from the country that issued it. That is a different path from a first Zimbabwean licence.

How long is the certificate of competency a licence?

For 30 days from the date it was issued, under the 2023 regulations, while the driver's licence is produced.
