Provisional licence
Provisional Licence Requirements in Zimbabwe
Age
SI 119 of 2023 says an examiner shall not issue a learner's licence for any class of motor vehicle to an applicant under 16. That is the floor for a car or a light motorcycle.
The same section sets 18 as the floor for construction vehicles, heavy vehicles, and certain codes. A passenger public-service vehicle is stricter still: at least 25 years old, with not less than five years of driving experience. If you are applying for an ordinary car, 16 and a pass on the learner's test is the starting point.
Documents and eyesight
The application rules expect every licence you already hold, proof of date of birth if the examiner asks, specimen signatures, and photographs. Depots that capture a digital photo and signature still need to know you are the person named on the ID.
Eyesight is checked before the questions start. If you fail it, studying harder will not fix the morning. Get your eyes tested in advance if you already struggle to read signs at a distance.
The requirement people forget
You must actually pass the test. A booking, a payment and a school enrolment are not a provisional licence. The computer marks the paper. Learn signs, give-way and diagrams before you pay the fee. The free questions on this site are a sample. The full set, with explanations, is in PassDrive.
Questions people ask
Do I need a medical certificate for a car learner's licence?
The ordinary applicant needs the VID eye test. A separate medical or optical certificate is required when the law or the examiner asks for one, including where a condition has to be certified on the prescribed form.
Can a 16-year-old get a provisional licence for a kombi?
No. Passenger public-service vehicles require at least 25 years of age and five years of driving experience.
