Road signs
Regulatory and Prohibitory Signs
Prohibitory signs
A number in a red circle is the maximum speed in km/h from that point until another limit ends it. A red circle with two cars, or a car and a bike, side by side and barred, is no overtaking. A red circle with a parking symbol barred is no parking. A red circle with a horizontal white bar is no entry.
These are not advice. "I was only a little over" is still over the limit the sign set.
Stop and yield
Stop is an octagon. Wheels stop turning. Count a pause. Look both ways. Move only when the road you are entering is clear, and still give way.
Yield, the inverted triangle in the signs regulations, means give way to traffic on the road you are joining, or to rail traffic at a crossing, when that traffic is close enough to be a danger. If nothing is coming you do not have to sit there as you would at a stop sign. You do have to be slow enough to stop if something appears.
Free practice question
These are PassDrive practice examples, written so you learn the rule. The VID screen randomises its questions, so the wording on the day will be different.
Practice
You face a stop sign. The road you are joining looks empty. What is required?
- Slow to walking pace and roll through
- Stop completely, then move off when it is safe
- Hoot and proceed
- Stop only if you see headlights
Show the answer
B. Stop completely, then move off when it is safe. Stop means a full stop every time, including when you think the road is empty.
Questions people ask
Does a speed limit sign end at the next junction?
It applies until another sign changes it or the limit is ended. Do not invent an end at a side road.
