Roundabout Rules in Zimbabwe

Study diagram of a roundabout. The entering car gives way to the car already on the roundabout.
Study diagram. The car waiting at the entrance gives way to the car already circulating.

The rule on the sign

The mandatory roundabout sign in Zimbabwe's traffic signs regulations tells the driver to move in a clockwise direction and to yield to traffic approaching from the right within the roundabout, when that traffic is close enough to be a danger. Clockwise is what left-hand traffic does around a circle. "From the right" is the traffic already on your right as you wait at the entry.

You do not stop dead if the roundabout is empty. You also do not force a gap in front of a car that is already on it.

Signals and lanes

Approach in the correct lane. Indicate left as you leave, so the driver waiting at the next entry knows you are coming off. If you are taking the last exit, essentially turning right, indicate right on the approach and left as you exit. Do not change lanes inside the circle beside another car.

Free practice question

These are PassDrive practice examples, written so you learn the rule. The VID screen randomises its questions, so the wording on the day will be different.

Practice

You are waiting to enter. A car is already on the roundabout, coming from your right. What do you do?

  1. Enter, because you stopped first
  2. Give way to that car
  3. Enter if you hoot
  4. Enter, because roundabouts give priority to traffic waiting to join
Show the answer

B. Give way to that car. Traffic already on the roundabout, approaching from your right, has priority.

Questions people ask

Do I give way to the left?

No. Look to the right. That is the side the circulating traffic comes from when you keep left.
