Warning Road Signs

What the triangle is doing

If the VID question asks "what does this sign mean?" and the plate is a triangle, start your answer with "warning" or "ahead". A crossroads symbol means a crossroads ahead, not "give way now". A curve means the road bends. Children, pedestrians, animals, roadworks and traffic signals all appear in this family.

The action is yours to judge: reduce speed enough that you can stop if the hazard is in your path. Overtaking on the approach to the hazard is a common wrong answer.

Signs people mix up with orders

A triangle with traffic lights means lights ahead, not "the light is red". A triangle with a T-junction means the road layout is about to change, not that you already have to give way. The give-way sign is a different shape: an inverted triangle, usually at the line where you must yield.

Free practice question

These are PassDrive practice examples, written so you learn the rule. The VID screen randomises its questions, so the wording on the day will be different.

Practice

Which sign only warns you, without ordering a specific movement?

  1. A blue circle with a white arrow
  2. A red circle with 80
  3. A red-bordered triangle showing a curve
  4. An octagonal stop sign
Show the answer

C. A red-bordered triangle showing a curve. The triangle warns of the curve. The blue circle orders a direction. The red circle sets a maximum speed. Stop means stop.

Questions people ask

Do I have to stop at every warning sign?

No. You adjust speed and position so the hazard does not become a surprise.
